30th Annual Virtual Baltimore Limb Deformity Course

Welcome! The Baltimore Limb Deformity Course (BLDC) has been the standard in teaching lower extremity alignment for the last 30 years. It is intended for orthopedic surgeons and podiatrists who treat long bone and foot/ankle deformities. No prior experience is required.

The course features lectures, deformity planning sessions, innovative apps, interactive participant case presentations, and an internationally renowned faculty. We will introduce basic and advanced limb reconstruction concepts including limb alignment, limb lengthening, corrective osteotomies, and internal and external fixation.

We have developed a syllabus that includes over 25 hours of pre-recorded planning and deformity correction talks/workshops and hardware application videos, in addition to 7 hours of live, interactive sessions for Q&A and case discussions. The virtual course enables surgeons to view the content on their own time and at their own pace. These on-demand videos will be available August 15 through September 30, 2020. Five live virtual sessions occurred on Saturday, August 29, and Sunday, August 30, 2020 - all sessions were recorded and are uploaded for viewing.

The Art of Limb Alignment, Ninth Edition

The ninth edition (2020) of The Art of Limb Alignment is now available for purchase on Amazon. Although the book is not required, we will be referring to it and the workbook exercises contained in it frequently during the Course.

Course Objectives

Our goals are to introduce basic and advanced concepts in limb alignment, corrective osteotomies, and internal and external fixation for limb reconstruction, including lengthening and realignment. Topics to be covered include:

  • Single-level and double-level tibial and femoral deformities
  • Sagittal and oblique plane deformities
  • Rotational deformities
  • Foot and ankle deformities
  • Monolateral/circular external fixation
  • Acute correction techniques
  • Gait implications for angular and rotational deformities
  • Measurement of deformity on digital radiographs
  • Consequences of joint malorientation and malalignment
  • Limb lengthening techniques

Following completion of this event, participants will be able to:

  • Describe simple and complex pediatric and adult lower limb deformities
  • Interpret advances in the field of limb reconstruction and deformity correction
  • Identify optimal location of the osteotomy
  • Recognize the methodology of minimally invasive internal and external fixation
  • Analyze deformities of the lower limb using electronic media technology
